Mmmm – delicious, warm hot cocoa. Nothing beats a cozy cup of cocoa when it is chilly outside. The only thing better is if it is homemade hot chocolate! Not a mix, but made with your own ingredients so you can make it just the way you like it! There are many different recipes for homemade hot cocoa. Some are so you can make hot chocolate that you drink right now, and some are for mixes that you can store and use later or give as gifts. Here are a few of each type of recipe.

Ready to Drink Homemade Hot Chocolate
*Note – most of these recipes are for making on the stove top, not in a hot cocoa machine. We will add a hot cocoa machine recipe at the end.
Yummy Hot Cocoa
1/4 cup cocoa (the baking variety like Hershey’s) – can adjust to taste
1/2 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
1/3 cup hot water
1 quart milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Mix cocoa, sugar and salt together in a medium saucepan. Stir in water and bring to a boil over medium heat – constantly stirring. Continue boiling and stirring for 5 minutes. Add milk and bring to drinking temperature. Don’t boil after you add the milk. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Whip with a whisk or a rotary beater until frothy. Serve with marshmallows. Delicious!
Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Making peppermint hot chocolate is very easy! Just mix up a cup of your favorite hot cocoa and add mint extract to taste. Put a peppermint stick in the cup and there you have it – a delicious cup of peppermint hot cocoa!
Mexican Hot Chocolate
Like the peppermint hot chocolate above, Mexican hot chocolate is your favorite hot cocoa with a twist. In this case, the twist is cinnamon. For a simple cup of Mexican hot cocoa, make your favorite cup of hot cocoa and sprinkle cinnamon on top to taste. Add a cinnamon stick for garnish and there you have it!
For those of you who want a truly homemade Mexican hot chocolate here is a good recipe:
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1 c. boiling water
Dash of ground cloves or nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
Whole cinnamon sticks
Mix cocoa and sugar in small saucepan; stir in water. Bring to boil then reduce heat and cook for 2 minutes, while stirring constantly. Add cloves, cinnamon and milk. Simmer 5 minutes – but don’t boil. Add vanilla and stir in with a whisk. Serve hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. Add cinnamon sticks for garnish. Makes 4 servings.
Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix
Creamy Hot Cocoa Mix
8 quart box of powdered milk
3 lb container of Nestle Quick
1/2 to 1 cup powdered sugar
8 oz container of coffee creamer
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. When you want a cup of hot cocoa, mix 1/3 cup of this mix with 1 cup boiling water. This is a yummy mix that makes a perfect gift! Keeps for a long time when stored in an airtight container.
Cocoa Machine Hot Chocolate Recipe
For a great recipe to use in your hot cocoa machine, this one can’t be beat. In the winter months I make a batch (or two!) of this every night!
The best recipe for great cocoa maker hot chocolate
2 cups milk (I use skim to keep the calories down)
1/2 cup half and half (see why I use the skim milk!)
1 T cocoa powder
1/3 cup sugar
Put it all in the machine and turn it on. This cocoa is so creamy – I will never use instant again!
